SSA Collaborates with VA on New Expedited Disability Process for Veterans

Effective March 17, 2014, American veterans with a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) disability compensation rating of 100% Permanent & Total (P&T) are eligible for expedited processing of their Social Security disability applications.

According to SSA’s press release on this initiative, “In order to receive the expedited service, veterans must tell Social Security they have a VA disability compensation rating of 100% P&T and show proof of their disability rating with their VA Notification Letter.” This can be done in person or online through the Remarks Section of the disability application.

While the VA rating does not guarantee an approval for Supplemental Security Income (SSI)/Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits, it should expedite the time it takes for SSA to adjudicate the application.  All decisions will still be based on SSA’s strict eligibility requirements and definitions of disability.  This is similar to how SSA currently handles its Wounded Warrior applications.
